2008 Festival Fringe

A programme of four regional concerts to bring world-class organ virtuosi to local audiences around the country, and to highlight fine heritage instruments and the buildings housing them.

Saturday 21 June, 8pm, St Canice’s Cathedral

Pipeworks joins in the festivities surrounding the opening of the newly rebuilt Bevington organ in Kilkenny’s stunning medieval cathedral. An afternoon programme of events, including a talk by Prof. Gerard Gillen and Evensong sung by the cathedral choir, concludes with a recital by celebrated American virtuoso and Pipeworks jury member David Higgs. A celebratory tone is set by works ranging from the profound to the profane: Bach, Kittel, Pärt, Bolcom, Conte, Lefebure-Wely, Karg-Elert and concluding with Liszt’s dazzling Prelude and Fugue on BACH. Special travel arrangements by rail are available for Pipeworks friends and sponsors.

Pipeworks juror Daniel Roth, organist of the famous Parisian church of St Sulpice, presents French symphonic masterworks on the superb Father Willis organ in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dundalk.

This recital concludes a day of events in Dundalk featuring this magnificent instrument. Special travel arrangements by rail are available for Pipeworks friends and sponsors.

Hans Fagius plays the 1858 Telford organ as part of the centenary celebrations of this unique instrument by Ireland’s leading 19th century organ builder.
